A British school teacher has been arrested in Sudan for allowing her pupils to pick a name for a teddy bear. The six and seven year olds choose “Mohammad”.
I had to post this story cause it’s seriously disgusting and so utterly ridiculous.
Gillian Gibbons, 54, was arrested after parents complained about the teddy’s name.
The spokesman said the naming of the teddy happened months ago and was chosen by the children because it is a common name in the country.
“This happened in September and the parents did not have a problem with it,” he said.
So why complain? What’s wrong with calling a teddy bear “Mohammad”? And why now?
Fellow teachers at Khartoum’s Unity High School told Reuters news agency they feared for Ms Gibbons’ safety after receiving reports that men had started gathering outside the police station where she was being held.
It is seen as an insult to Islam to attempt to make an image of the Prophet Muhammad.
Well, apparently naming a teddy bear “Mohammad” is an insult to Islam. Erm ok. Unfortunately this just shows once again that certain people simply lack a brain. Naming their children “Mohammad” is ok, in fact, it’s one of the most common names amongst Muslims but under no circumstance give the very same name to a teddy bear?
Burning question: Which is more likely to bring shame on the name?
One Muslim teacher at the independent school for Christian and Muslim children, who has a child in Ms Gibbons’ class, said she had not found the project offensive.
“I know Gillian and she would never have meant it as an insult. I was just impressed that she got them to vote,” the teacher said.
But was it the name “Mohammad” that so terribly infuriated the parents of the school kids? Perhaps it was more the fact that she brought democracy into the classroom.
If charged and found guilty, she faces up to 40 lashes for blasphemy.
